Question Details
A student was not doing as I told them so I raised my voice and they started to cry. I didn’t know what to do and now I feel like a failure that this happened.
Answer
Firstly, do not beat yourself up. These things happen and you won’t be the first teacher to make a student cry. The fact that you are reflecting on this shows that you are an empathetic teacher with your student wellbeing at the heart of your teaching. If you haven’t already, next time you see the student, take them to one side and check in. Make sure they know that it was never your intention to upset them and you’re sorry that this happened. Also, address the behaviour that caused you to raise your voice and make sure they know that this is unacceptable behaviour. However, be careful not to make this into an ‘excuse’ for raising your voice.
